What is TTP? - Other Conditions

Acquired TTP Congenital TTP

TTP is rare. It is estimated to affect between one and four in every million people. and is diagnosed via a series of characteristics, rather than one simple test.

Because of this it is not uncommon for medical staff to initially mis-diagnose the condition.

Equally TTP (Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura) may sound similar to other bleeding disorders such as ITP - Immune (Idiopathic) Thrombocytopenic Purpura. ITP is quite different to TTP.

Until very recently TTP was often linked with HUS (Heamolytic Uremic Syndrome). These two conditions are now thought to be separate, although sometimes the clinical symptoms can be similar and it is difficult to work out whether its TTP or HUS.

Lupus is another condition that doctors may test for when attempting to diagnose. TTP may be secondary to Lupus or may be diagnosed before Lupus.

Links to support organisations for all of these conditions and more can be found on the Links page.
